What is The Sound of Scars?
The Sound of Scars is an idea I have fostered for the last year as a means to bring awareness and provide support to those experiencing emotional abuse like I have in my past when I felt there was no-where to turn. The idea is simple, show emotional abuse through a new medium; Art and music. By combining mediums, a larger impact can be created on the viewer both mentally as well as sensationally. This is the goal of the grant funded gallery being hosted at the Rochester Civic Theatre, August 6-21, 2015 (More Info Here). But "The Sound of Scars" isn't just a one time showcase of art and music, It's a symbol of awareness and hope that can be carried on to help support those in need as well as bring light to many overlooked topics in our world.
"Every pain has a scar, every scar has a story, and every story deserves to be heard"
This is the premise of "the Sound of Scars". To be a forum to help support, bring awareness to, and eventually to lead to the reduction of emotional abuse.
The Gallery
The initial unveiling of "The Sound of Scars" will be as a grant funded art and music gallery installation to raise attention to the cause and the idea. The gallery will feature 7 anonymous handwritten stories, suspended from the ceiling of the Civic Theatre Lobby on 6ft. x 7ft. canvas frames. Each story is accompanied by multiple forms of art. The most notable being an original music composition, similar to a movie score, that captures the essence of the story and the power of the emotions through melody and instrumentation. Sharing the canvas sheet will be a sizable monochrome photograph of the writer of the story, silhouetted and modified to not reveal their identity. Finally a pedestal will sit in front of each story from which the music will be activated, but also where will rest a single found object, chosen by the writer of the story, to represent that period of their life. These 7 section will be staggered throughout the lobby and surrounded by black netting as a way to further skew the perception and senses as one moves through this installation.
The Opening Night Reception
To kick off the gallery, an opening night will be held Wednesday, August 5th from 6-9pm. This will feature a live music and dance performance on the topic and a silent art auction fundraiser for local non-profits supporting emotional abuse awareness. The Woman's Shelter and Mission 21 will both be present to provide further information and insight into the topics surrounding emotional abuse, as well as donation opportunities to support the "Sound of Scars" goals.
Beyond the Gallery
As I have mentioned before, I want this idea to continue on and become a symbol of hope and awareness for the topic of emotional abuse. If I can help one person realize they themselves are in an emotionally abusive situation, whether encountering or perpetrating, than to me this entire project gains more meaning. For this idea to continue, it needs to grow and find more outlets of expression. This could include regular meetings for people to talk, moderated public forums for people to share their stories, or simply an updated online resource center for those experiencing emotional abuse. "The Sound of Scars" will always carry the artistic tones it was born with, but my hope is that it can evolve into a voice for awareness. I am one person, and I have limits, to go beyond the gallery concept, I will need the support an effort of others. If you are interested in this, whether in the SE Minnesota area or beyond, please reach out and provide feedback on this concept. [email protected].
Thank you.
